Maths
Our school works towards ensuring that your children will view mathematics with pleasure, developing a positive attitude through practical activities which allow pupils to apply and investigate mathematical concepts. The children will learn about all of their age-related content domains including; number - place value; number - addition and subtraction; number - multiplication and division; number - fractions; geometry - properties of shape and position and direction; measurement; ratio and proportion and algebra.
Maths Intent
Children acquire a secure and deep understanding of core fluency facts which can be applied to a wide range of calculations. They confidently make links through small steps which enables them to reason and solve problems, explaining their thinking using mathematical vocabulary. Children collaborate and are resilient learners leading them to build confidence and experience success in this inter-connected discipline.
There is the equivalent of five daily Maths lessons each week. As with English, this can be flexible to suit the learning occurring in class that week. Classes follow our PROMISE model over several lessons giving opportunities to provide further clarification through whole class teaching followed by specific practice. The aim is to move children towards independence, so careful scaffolding of support is in place, with the responsibility slowly shifting over to the children for their learning.
We use 'Fluency in Five' at the starts of lessons and we follow the The White Rose Maths long term and medium term plans to deliver the Maths curriculum.
Children are expected to develop ‘Total Recall’ of basic number facts. Through tests children earn badges to show how they are acquiring knowledge and to celebrate how they are challenging themselves to be successful. Children can attempt tests as often as they want to and are encouraged to persevere.
Early Maths provision is included in the EYFS curriculum and has a transitional link to the Year 1 mathematics program of learning. Across all key stages, computers, laptops, Ipads, interactive whiteboards, visualisers and interactive teaching programs are used throughout the school to assist children with their understanding of all the mathematics content domains.
All pupils have access to a wide range of concrete resources to support their learning. Emphasis is placed initially on practical work and understanding the language of mathematics in context so the foundations are laid for future learning. As soon as the skills are learnt, pupil work evolves into activities which use and apply their skills with an expectation that children will achieve mastery in the skill by completing challenging reasoning activities and investigations.
Numbots (Reception and KS1) and Times Tables Rockstars (Year 3 - Year 6) are also available for home learning.
